The Succession to the Crown Act 2013 (c. 20) is a significant piece of legislation in the United Kingdom that reformed the rules governing the British throne’s succession. The key provisions of this act:

Repeal of the Royal Marriages Act 1772:

The act abolished the Royal Marriages Act of 1772, which had imposed restrictions on royal marriages. Previously, a person who married a Roman Catholic was disqualified from the line of succession. This change allowed greater freedom in choosing a spouse.

Sovereign’s Approval for Marriages:

While the first six individuals in line to the throne still require the King’s consent to marry, those beyond the top six no longer need to seek approval. This alteration reflects a more modern approach to personal relationships within the royal family.

The Succession to the Crown Act came into force on 26 March 2015, aligning with similar changes implemented by other Commonwealth realms following the 2011 Perth Agreement.

Own unclaimed swans in the UK

Dating back to the 12th century, a unique and somewhat whimsical tradition grants the British monarch ownership rights over unclaimed swans swimming in open waters across the United Kingdom. This practice, known as “swan upping,” has historical roots and continues to this day.

Origins and Purpose:

The tradition of swan upping emerged during medieval times when swans were considered a valuable resource for their meat, feathers, and symbolism. Swans were often associated with nobility and grace.

To regulate the swan population and protect these majestic birds, the Crown asserted ownership over them. The monarch’s ownership was symbolized by a special mark or “swan mark” placed on the birds.

Swan Upping Process:

Annually, during a designated week in July, swan upping takes place on the River Thames in England. Swan uppers, typically officials from the Royal Swan Upping Company, participate in this event.

The swan uppers row along the river, identifying and counting swans. When they encounter unmarked swans, they capture them briefly, examine them, and affix the royal swan mark (a unique pattern) to their beaks.

Symbolism and Conservation:

The Crown’s ownership ensures that swans receive protection and care. It also emphasizes the importance of preserving natural habitats and wildlife.

Exceptions and Legal Protections:

Not all swans fall under the Crown’s ownership. Some swans belong to specific institutions (such as the Vintners’ and Dyers’ livery companies) and bear their respective marks.

Additionally, mute swans (Cygnus olor) are the primary species protected by this tradition. Other species of swans are not subject to swan upping.

In a nutshell, the monarch’s ownership of unclaimed swans is a delightful blend of history, symbolism, and conservations reminder of the enduring ties between royalty and the natural world.
